Text Box: Q - Is the electricity supply the same as in the UK?
A - Yes, the electricity supply is a similar voltage to that in the UK (European standard 230v).  Remember to bring with you a couple of UK / Spanish plug adapters, purchased at the airport or your local DIY store.
Q - What papers and basic equipment do I need to carry if I am driving?
A - If you intend driving down in your own UK registered vehicle, you should ensure that you are carrying the following documentation and equipment, in the unlikely event of you being stopped by the police.
  · Valid Driving Licence and Valid MOT Certificate, if applicable.
  · Valid Registration Document and Valid Insurance Certificate.
  · Proof of vehicle purchase and VAT payment.
  · Two warning triangles and fluorescent jacket for break downs.
  · Spare fuses, head lamp, tail lamp and brake lamp bulbs.
Be advised that a near “Zero Tolerance” policy on drink driving is now operated by the Police and that they can impose on the spot, cash only, fines for certain minor traffic violations.
Q - Is there any more crime in Spain than in the UK, for example?
A - No, Catalunya enjoys one of the lowest crime rates in Europe; but you should take the normal precautions when travelling, shopping or walking along the promenade.  Opportunist thieves operate in every country and city, but any incident just seems worse when you are on holiday and cannot speak the local language.  Some basic reminders:
  · Keep your vehicle locked at all times.
  · Keep valuables out of sight, preferably in the vehicles boot.
  · Do not stop to pick up strangers on the motorways.
  · Be cautious if another vehicle signals you to stop or pullover.
  · Try to use well lit and authorised parking or services rest areas.
  · On trains, keep luggage in overhead racks, in full view.
  · Take care with handbags in busy pedestrian areas.
  · Don’t carry a wallet visibly in your rear pocket.
  · Try not to “flash your cash” when making payments.
Q - Can I get medical treatment if I fall ill?
A - You will find that the chemists (Green X outside premises) offer a much more comprehensive range of remedies and should be your first port of call for the most common ailments.  You should complete and have stamped in the UK before your departure, a Form E111 or equiv., available free, from your local Post Office.  This normally entitles you and your family to reciprocal medical treatment when on holiday; always check your particular circumstances before travelling.
Q - What times do the shops and supermarkets open?
A – Shops normally open between 10:00 to 14 :00 and 16:00 to 20:00, with the now numerous, larger supermarkets generally being open all day, from 08:00 to 20:00 or even later.  Banks open at 08:30 and there are numerous cash dispensers located throughout the area.  People tend to eat out long and late, with restaurants catering accordingly.
Q - Will I need to carry some form of personal identification?
A - Yes, most petrol stations, shops and supermarkets will require you to provide photo identification (Passport or new format Driving Licence), if you intend to pay with a credit card, particularly in the summer.  The Police advise the carrying of some ID at all times.
Q - Can I hire a car?
A - Yes, all major airports have their own car hire desks, but you may wish to arrange the hire at the time of booking flights to avoid delays, if you require a particular size or type of vehicle.  Local car hire agents also operate in Roses, Empuriabrava and Figueres.  Don’t forget your Driving Licence.  All grades of fuel continue to be somewhat cheaper in Catalunya than in the UK.
